Dorset Echo Our operations commenced on
Saturday 24th August 2002 and the level of service that we operate was
increased from Monday 11th November 2002. We currently operate between
Portland, Weymouth and Dorchester – these services are operated
commercially. This service was increased from Easter 2003 and service
between Portland, Weymouth and Dorchester now operates every 20 minutes
for most of the day. For details of our timetables please click on the

Our services
In December 2002 we were the
first bus operator in Dorset to introduce smartcards – our SmartRider
cards never expire and give regular passengers a 10% discount on cash
fares (click on the link
SmartRider for further
details).
In
May 2003 we commenced operation of our second service
between Weymouth and Wyke Regis (X6) - this route
serves a number of roads in Wyke Regis from which
another operator had withdrawn its services. In July
2003 we moved from Southwell Business Park, where
our operations were subject to a number of planning
restrictions, to Tradecroft Industrial Estate which
gives us greater ability to take advantage of suitable
opportunities as and when they arise to expand our
services. We
also purchased a 19 seat open top Mercedes 608 midibus
from East Yorkshire Motor Services in July 2003. This
vehicle is believed to be unique in the United Kingdom
and during the summer months this vehicle, which was
named Gemma (the name of the Weymouth Carnival Queen),
was used on the X10 service between Weymouth and Portland
Bill. With
the start of the winter school term in September 2003
Sureline commenced operation of its first school service
between Portland and St. Augustine's school in Weymouth
provided under contract for Dorset County Council.
Sureline also took over the operation of a school
service between Weymouth and St. John's school that
had been withdrawn by another operator. At
the Bus and Coach Show in September 2003 it was announced
that Sureline's SmartRider card had been shortlisted
as a finalist for the Innovation Award (sponsored
by BP) in the prestigious Bus Industry Awards for
2003. At the subsequent awards ceremony that was held
in London on 5th November 2003 Sureline's SmartRider
card was highly commended. Photo Courtesy of

In
November 2003 Sureline introduced its third new service
between Weymouth and Downclose Estate (X7) - as with
the X6 service this route serves a number of roads
in Downclose Estate from which another operator had
withdrawn its services. Dorset
County Council awarded Sureline 2 Social Services
contracts and these commenced operation in February
2004. To operate these contracts one of the Mercedes
709 midibuses had to be fitted with seat belts whilst
a 16 seat LDV Convoy minibus was purchased for the
operation of the other contract. The
number of passengers using the company's services
continues to increase - the number of passengers carried
per bus is currently over 20% higher when compared
with the same period last year. As a consequence there
are now some journeys on which demand exceeds the
passenger capacity that is provided by a Mercedes
709 midibus and to provide additional passenger capacity
two (2) 33 seat Dennis Dart single deck buses have
been purchased from Thaesdown Transport. The first
Dennis Dart will enter service in June. Two
new all day tickets were introduced from Saturday
8th May - promoted as Dayrider tickets a Weymouth
Dayrider gives unlimited travel in Weymouth between
Upwey (Bottom of Ridgeway Hill) and Ferrybridge whilst
a Dorset Dayrider gives unlimited travel on all the
Company's services between Dorchester, Weymouth and
Portland Bill. Both Weymouth and Dorset Dayrider tickets
are available for adults, children (aged over 5 and
under 16) and concessionary passengers. Family Dayrider
tickets are also available giving unlimited travel
on one ticket for 2 adults and up to 2 children. Agreement
has also been reached with Lulworth Estates and Monkey
World to operate under contract a daily (except Saturday)
service during July and August 2004 between Durdle
Door, Lulworth Cove, Lulworth Castle, Wool Station
and Monkey World. This service will also provide a
morning journey from Portland and Weymouth to Lulworth
Cove, Lulworth Castle and Monkey World with a return
journey in the late afternoon to Weymouth and Portland.
Dorset County Council are providing financial support
for this service to additionally operate on Sundays
and Public Holidays during May, June and September
commencing from Sunday 23rd May. Numbered X25 this
service will be operated by a single deck bus in May
and June whilst an open top double deck bus will be
operated on the service during July, August and September.
